Ride up the Falkirk Wheel to reach the the Union Canal,
which is lock free throughout its entire length. This will
take you into the heart of Edinburgh.Through the 690yrd Falkirk
Tunnel and over Avon and Almond queducts. For the shopaholics aboard
Princes Street, the main shopping thoroughfare, and Edinburgh Castle
are within easy walking distance of the canal basin. . You will also
go through the ancient burgh of Linlithgow. Here you can visit the
palace and loch, stock up with water and fresh supplies, and eat in
one of the many local restaurants.
The
Falkirk Wheel
The Falkirk wheel is a
modern innovation that could be viewed as both mobile sculture and
practical boat lift, it is cetainly one of the most dramatic
features of the inland Waterways to be aded in recent times.
It replaces a long since
vanished flight of locks andenables continuity between the union
canal and the Forth and Clyde.
Western Routes
Heading west will take
you to Glasgow and even down to the coast at Bowling on the Clyde. A Forth and Clyde canal boating
holiday can be aunique experience never to be forgotten with the
strech between Falkirk and
Kirkintilloch usually regarded asone of the most attractive stretches of the
Scottish Lowland Canals .
